FAST FACTS
Once estate of socialite and arts benefactor Marjorie Post in northwest Washington, D.C. Set in scenic location of 25 acres, on edge of wooded Rock Creek Park. Neo-Georgian mansion built n the 1920s and extensive formal gardens opened to the public in 1977.
Outstanding collection of Russian Imperial art; partially accumulated by Post when third husband Joseph E. Davies was U.S. ambassador to Soviet Union from 1936 to 1938. Highlights include: two Imperial Easter eggs, both presents to Czar Nicholas’ mother, Empress Maria; nuptial crown of Czarina Alexandra; and variety of Faberge designed objects belonging to the Romanov family (clocks, brooches, boxes, even framed photographs). Other area of emphasis is 18th century decorative art especially Louis XVI style.
Website enables you to view individual rooms of Post’s luxurious home, such as the Icon Room, Russian Porcelain Room, French Drawing Room, as well as her bedroom suite and dressing room. Sections of garden and grounds are also visually accessible. Current special exhibitions: Passion of the Empress Catherine and Cartier.
